Moonstones have been highly valued for centuries.
Their price can vary from a few dollars to a few hundred per carat. They are valued firstly, depending on their adularescence (the optical phenomenon that creates a special sheen seen floating on the surface of the stone). Moonstones can come in white, rainbow colours and the reputable blue sheen! The more intense the colour, , the more rare and expensive the gem is.
Secondly, moonstones are valued according to how transparent they are. Most stones are translucent and milky. The transparent ones are rare. They become even more valuable when they have few or no inclusions.
The clarity of the stone, together with its transparency and intense sheen make them rather rare and valuable gems.
Myanmar yields some of the best blue moonstones but good quality ones are getting more scarce. Other locales include Sri Lanka, India, Australia, Brazil, Germany, Madagascar, Switzerland, Tanzania and the United States.
